Changes to the abortion law in Indonesia

In Indonesia, abortion is legally restricted and only permitted in specific circumstances. Abortion is permitted up to 14 weeks of pregnancy but only in cases of medical emergency or rape.

In August it was decided that only the police would have the right to grant abortion access for those pregnant as a result of rape.

SAAF grantee partner Jakarta Feminist is quoted in this article about the legal changes:

“In general women are still scared because of the culture, norms and also religion,” said Olin Monteiro, from the Jakarta Feminist group, one of several rights groups that are calling for the rules to be revised. “These values hinder women finding access when they have the right to terminate a pregnancy,” she said, “This regulation means that victims only have one choice. They have to go to the police. So, it’s very limiting.”
