Newsletter: Abortion now decriminalised in four Mexican states

Last week, Veracruz became the fourth State in Mexico to remove penalties for accessing abortion in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. It joins Mexico City, Oaxaca and Hidalgo in allowing abortion on request in the early stages of pregnancy.

Though of course there is work to be done to ensure all who need safe abortions in Mexico can access them, this is a positive step in the right direction. We congratulate Mexican activists who continue this fight, including SAAF grantee partners Balance and Equifonia.

SAAF grantee partner survey

Every year, SAAF sends out a survey to all grantee partners, asking them to share their views and experiences. This year, we received 61 responses and were pleased to see that the majority of respondents are satisfied with their relationship with SAAF (98%) and feel that SAAF is a flexible donor (85%). A full report on the survey is being shared with all SAAF funded organisations.

“SAAF supported us in the purchase of COVID19 materials and shared information with us regularly through the different discussion platforms to learn from other organisations and see how to adapt their strategies to ease our difficulties”

Grantee partner spotlight – Visible Impact

Visible Impact, a Nepal based NGO focused on the empowerment of girls, women, and young people has been funded by SAAF since the start of 2020.

Though Nepal has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, staff and volunteers at Visible Impact were determined to continue their work raising awareness about access to safe abortion.

As Sabina from the team points out in her recent blogpost for Girls Globe, abortion care in Nepal is “legal but stigmatised”. Moving all workshops online, they have now successfully trained 35 Youth Champions to share accurate information about abortion rights and services with their peers across the country.
