Victoria Enriquez – Mother of Gabriela, Si Mujer Young Leader

Gabriela has matured a lot through this project. She started as a 15 year old girl, and now she’s 20, and her thinking has changed so much. She’s also given us a lot as a family, we’ve learned from what she learns there, and it’s opened our minds.

Before we were more closeminded about abortion.

You grow up believing that abortion is bad, that it’s killing children. In fact, when I was pregnant with her, I did think about having an abortion, because I was so young, only 16 at the time. But in the end I didn’t do it, I thought, how can I do that to my daughter? But now she comes to me and says, mum, you could have made a different choice. I learned from her that it’s a woman’s decision. I didn’t do it at that time, but if someone else decides to have an abortion, or to have a baby, it’s each woman’s decision, and you can’t interfere. I did learn to have a little more tolerance, to understand that we as women are the ones who have the right to decide for ourselves whether we carry on pregnancies or not. I don’t have to force my daughter to have an abortion or not to have an abortion, I’ve learned that.

Overall, she has definitely improved her knowledge and she has taught us a lot over the years.

She is now very independent; she has gone ahead on her own with her university studies. She is a very independent woman, and I’m very proud of her.
